2005-09-16, emuckyducks - The Mucky Ducks, a book that was only written as a legacy to fallen friends, is now finding a global following.(PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- As reported in a news release on Sept. 10 (http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/9/prweb282947.htm), a small release of a rather bizarre book called The Mucky Ducks has started to find a diverse, global, cult following. The book was released as fiction but growing numbers are now questioning this. Many mariners are among the throng have contacted the website stating that they had heard rumors of these tales at the time and that they believed the stories to be true. Peter Mursson, a half Swedish mariner believes that he knows the man that in the book was called Harry Drake but under a different name, he said. "They may have put the book out as fiction but I’m pretty sure it’s 90% fact," a sentiment echoed by other men of the sea. He went on "If it is the Harry I know I can understand his comments about Sweden, (there are harsh words about Sweden in the book). I was born in 54 and lived my youth between both Sweden and England. I remember always being glad to get back to the UK. The Harry I met was a man with a huge sense of humour, an open handshake and a nature that generated trust. Yet there was also an air of sadness about the man, you could almost feel the inner anguish." The book is set mainly against a backdrop of the South Pacific, Coral Sea, China Sea and Malacca Straits. It tells the story, which most now believe is in reality a biography, of a group of seamen belonging to a secret organisation called ‘The Sea Eagles’ but referred to amongst themselves as The Mucky Ducks. Unlike usual books the main characters in this one aren’t exactly the good guys. Realistically they were not much more than marine mercenaries, however, they did try and work to preserve the oceans for honest seamen; unfortunately, sometimes they had to be rather bad to do it. In later years their greatest challenge came from fighting the rise of modern pirates. The story really spans the lifetime of Harry Drake and as his life unfolds we witness the gradual deterioration in character, ethics and morals. A good man being gradually eroded by the life he lives and by watching so many of his friends die, or as the Ducks put it ‘make their exit’. Many of the Ducks fell in the performance of their duties and others were left emotionally damaged. Out of all the Ducks that served over the years only three still survive. This is not a book for people looking for suspenseful plots and large, improbable, action. The action is there but kept in perspective because that’s the way the people concerned would have wanted it. When reading a précis it would be easy to think that this is a very morbid book, nothing could be further from the truth. From cover to cover it is swimming in humour and also contains one of the strangest and tragic love stories of all times. The following is just a smattering of readers comments received into the website: "A tale that is a perfect mix of humor, romance, and daring heroism. The Mucky Ducks is a must read for those that love a great action story which takes it`s toll among those who`s morality wins out over uncertain legalities." Jim Bragg – Florida "I found this story got me wanting to continue every time I picked up the book. I think the story pulls you in at the start and keeps getting better, getting to know the characters and where they come from, what makes them tick, etc... I would love to see this book in the US market, hope that day will come. Its also a great story that would (I think) do well at the movies, if they ever decide to go that route. I will cherish this book for years to come and will read it whenever I feel a bit down." Donna Nye – Chicago "A very refreshing read. Nobody larger than life just real people in exceptional circumstances and how they deal with their day to day lives. Plenty of excitement, triumphs, disappointments all with a large dose of laughter and romance. A book full of amazing situations and intriguing charters, a story leaving you with the feeling of what boring lives the rest of us live. This is the sort of book you read time and time again." Paul Turner - Queensland "I just have to write something. This book gave me back the ability to have wonderful dreams. I don`t know what it was but the way it was written just dragged me into page. Not many people can tell a real love story when it`s set against such a terrible background and about people that I suppose were almost the villains. I love their world, how different from the mundane existence we nearly all live." Alice P – Bradford "Lately books have become very formalized and predictable. Finding this book was the best thing I have done in years. A huge story told with a lot of laughter and many tears. A story the way they used to be when every book had an individual identity. I will be reading it again and again." Keith Mason – London "This was put out as fiction but I tend to think there is a deal of truth hidden between these covers. As a retired Master Mariner I have heard of some of these exploits and am almost sure I once saw the Mucky Ducks in action. Even without that this is a marvelous read and a book that I will treasure and carry with me in my travels." Martin Blackstall - Sydney A writer who recently caught up with the very private man that in the book they have called Harry Drake stated that you only had to spend some time with the man to know the book is, at least, based on fact, even though he denies it. The man has more scars than a casualty ward and a nature that can only be formed by extreme adversity. You can forgive the fact that the book isn’t that well presented; it’s the words that count. As a story told looking back into the past, it leaves us with one question, "Is the price never too high?" As the author, Hendrick van der Zee, says in his lead-in “That’s the trouble with really important questions, the answer usually comes far too late.
